Five ascents of the Sanctuary of San Luca
The Giro dell’Emilia returns to Bologna on 18 August 2020, for the 103rd edition of one of the oldest classics in Italian cycling, held since 1909.
The race is decided on the Sanctuary of San Luca, climbed five times over a finishing circuit that also takes in the double bend known as Le Orfanelle and the Casaglia descent. The bend takes its name from an orphanage founded in 1930 near the sanctuary and run by the Imeldine sisters: the first five orphan girls climbed the hill on 11 February that year, and the institution remained active until 1990.
