The Sarajevo Olympic Bobsleigh Track
On Mount Trebević, above Sarajevo, stand the remains of the Olympic bobsleigh and luge track built for the 1984 Winter Olympics. Constructed between 1981 and 1982, it hosted the European Bobsleigh Championships the following year and then, in February 1984, the Olympic events themselves, watched by tens of thousands of spectators along its course of more than a kilometre and thirteen turns.
Its story changed abruptly a few years later: during the siege of Sarajevo, between 1992 and 1996, the track was occupied by Bosnian Serb forces and used as an artillery position over the city below. It has stood abandoned ever since, overgrown and covered in graffiti — becoming over the years a place passed through by hikers, street artists and the curious, despite a few tentative restoration efforts begun in 2014.
